The Uniform
Uniform with a Purpose
At Skillern Elementary, we strive to develop a community of learners committed to academic achievement and high moral comportment. We employ a uniform to aid in that endeavor. Students wear uniforms to eliminate distractions, to unify and level the playing field, and to be a reminder that we are doing important work. We believe that the way we present ourselves outwardly impacts our attitude towards the work at hand and sets a tone for the community as a whole. Because we ask our students to give their best each day to the beautiful work of learning, so too we ask them to look their best, and foster a culture of order and intentionality.
Because of Skillern’s hybrid indoor/outdoor model, student uniforms must meet the demands of both settings. Indoors, the uniform is neat, traditional, and not distracting, to fit our ordered and peaceful classrooms. To accommodate outdoor learning, the Skillern uniform is flexible enough to meet the requirements of different weather and activities. Families may choose the fabric and fit that best meets their child’s needs. Students at Skillern must also be prepared with proper outdoor gear so they will always be ready to learn outdoors while still being safe and comfortable.
Uniform Policies
Non-uniform outerwear will not be worn indoors.
All uniform pieces must be labeled with students' first initial and last name.
Skirts and shorts shall fall no higher than 2 inches below the fingertips as measured when the student is standing arms relaxed to the side.
Shirts will be tucked in for indoor learning time. Shirts will come untucked during activities, during play, and out on the trail. Once the activity is over, however, the shirt should be tucked in again.
Undershirts with visible sleeves must be white, black, navy or gray.
Hair must be neat and not distracting. Hair accessories should not be distracting. Hair must be natural colors with the exception of non-natural accent colors, which may be worn.
Modest jewelry is allowed. An object that has a purpose other than jewelry cannot be worn as jewelry (i.e. chains or collars). Necklaces and bracelets may be worn up to two at a time. Earrings can be worn one set at a time, on the earlobes, and not larger than a quarter. Students should not come to school with gauged ear piercings. If your student already has such piercings, they should be minimized for school.
Makeup is not allowed at school unless there is a health necessity for having it and a note of explanation is given to the teacher.
No hats, visors, bandanas, or sunglasses are permitted indoors (religious headgear is authorized). Headbands and bows are permitted.
If a belt is worn, it must be brown or black.
All uniform shirts, sweaters, and fleeces must have the school logo.
